SUMMARY:Grand Opening - Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of the\n\nMorris Center for Lowcountry Heritage !\n\n\n\nThe grand opening festivities will include a classic car show\, a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony\, a full afternoon of live music\, children's activities and refreshments.\n\nThere will be a "Paths\, Docks\, Rivers\, Railroads\, and Superhighways" program with Bill Brockington. \n\n\n\nGuests will also be able to view several exhibits on display in the center\, including the Morris Center's own inaugural exhibit entitled "U.S. 17: A Road Side Story - Origins\, Outcomes and Optimism." It tells the story of transportation in the Lowcountry\, featuring U.S. Route 17 highway\, also known as the Coastal Highway.\n\n \n\nThe Sinclair Service Station\, with its "new" gas pumps\, provides a fitting atmosphere for the exhibit which will include interesting facts and anecdotes related to transportation history in the Lowcountry. Photos\, maps and a diorama created especially for the occasion add to the nostalgic appeal of the displays.\n\n\n\nSpecial Exhibition: \n\nMcKissick's Traveling Exhibit: Dawn of Freedom: The Freedmen's Town of Mitchelville\n\nThis exhibition explores one of the first self-governing towns formed by self-liberated African Americans during the Civil War. Dawn of Freedom draws on historic documents and photographs that examine the relationship between Mitchelville and the Union Army\, discussing the rapid development of the community into a short-lived town that featured its own legal system.\n\n \n\nPermanent Exhibit: \n\nHoney Hill Battlefield Display \n\nThis display features a three-dimensional diorama of the Honey Hill Battlefield that took place in Ridgeland\, South Carolina on November 30\, 1864. \n\n \n\nAbout The Daniel O. Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage\n\nLocated in the heart of downtown Ridgeland on U.S. 17\, the Daniel O.
