\n\nHistorian and engaging speaker Lawrence S. Rowland will tell the story of an early 20thcentury American literary figure&rsquo\;s love affair with Beaufort at the \;Monday\, February 25\, 2019 \;-- \;Dinner and a Lecture \;at the Verdier House\, 801 Bay Street.

\n\nSamuel Hopkins Adams\, a member of the Algonquin Circle of New York literary opinion makers\, wintered in Beaufort for almost 25 years\, 1935-1958\, and during his career wrote more than 50 books including novels\, biographies and political exposes. \; In the third volume of Rowland&rsquo\;s and Stephen Wise&rsquo\;s \;The History of Beaufort County\, South Carolina\, Rowland quotes Adams&rsquo\; on the first time he and his wife arrived in Beaufort and experienced its evocative beauty and &ldquo\;belvedered mansions."\; \; They turned to each other and said\, &ldquo\;This is it."\; \; Rowland said\, &ldquo\;Adams and his spouse spoke for a generation of artists and writers and for millions of tourists who followed them.&rdquo\;

\n\nRowland\, who knew Adams\, wrote that Adams was the literary bridge between 19thcentury and 20th \;century Beaufort and was a star among many writers and artists who lived in Beaufort off-and-on during the first half of the 20th \;century\, gathering at the Gold Eagle Inn and the Tidalholm Guest House.
