Description
Join us for our Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of the
Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage !
The grand opening festivities will include a classic car show, a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony, a full afternoon of live music, children’s activities and refreshments.
There will be a “Paths, Docks, Rivers, Railroads, and Superhighways” program with Bill Brockington.
Guests will also be able to view several exhibits on display in the center, including the Morris Center’s own inaugural exhibit entitled “U.S. 17: A Road Side Story - Origins, Outcomes and Optimism.” It tells the story of transportation in the Lowcountry, featuring U.S. Route 17 highway, also known as the Coastal Highway.
The Sinclair Service Station, with its “new” gas pumps, provides a fitting atmosphere for the exhibit which will include interesting facts and anecdotes related to transportation history in the Lowcountry. Photos, maps and a diorama created especially for the occasion add to the nostalgic appeal of the displays.
Special Exhibition:
McKissick’s Traveling Exhibit: Dawn of Freedom: The Freedmen’s Town of Mitchelville
This exhibition explores one of the first self-governing towns formed by self-liberated African Americans during the Civil War. Dawn of Freedom draws on historic documents and photographs that examine the relationship between Mitchelville and the Union Army, discussing the rapid development of the community into a short-lived town that featured its own legal system.
Permanent Exhibit:
Honey Hill Battlefield Display
This display features a three-dimensional diorama of the Honey Hill Battlefield that took place in Ridgeland, South Carolina on November 30, 1864.
About The Daniel O. Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage
Located in the heart of downtown Ridgeland on U.S. 17, the Daniel O. Morris Center For Lowcountry Heritage is a learning and exhibition center dedicated to preserving and nurturing the history, culture and spirit of Jasper County and surrounding counties. Housed in a collection of vintage buildings, with the architecturally distinctive Sinclair Service Station as its focal point, the center will feature ever changing exhibitions, interactive and dynamic learning opportunities, cultural offerings, storytelling and other art forms. The center is made possible from a trust left by the late Daniel “Danny” Morris, an entrepreneur and community leader who was active in the historical preservation, education and economic development of the area he called home.
