Seeking Director of Development
The Freedman Arts District, Beaufort, SC is seeking an experienced development and grant writing professional to lead development as we continue growing programs and our School of Arts, Craft, and Culture. The ideal candidate will have a successful history in development with a preference for arts and education. Our collaborative, team-based environment encourages initiative and creativity. Compensation is flexible based on qualifications and includes incentives based on performance. Freedman Arts District is expanding into a new campus in the heart of Beaufort's Historic District.
Education: The Freedman School of Arts, Craft, and Culture celebrates sea island crafts and culture in the same way the Arrowmont School and Penland School are regionally focused. We are modeling our school on those successful schools.
Art and Craft Gallery: Our gallery features artists and craftsmen with events and products for all tastes. We are excited to help artists achieve their goals.
Home restoration: Our revolving fund program works with owners to restore or replace homes in the Arts District. The National Parks Service describes this area as the first place in the US where formerly enslaved people could own property and take part in the creation of intergenerational wealth.
Events: Signature events include our "Chalk it up" festival featuring artists from across the US and beyond. Our Artist Sunday tour supports galleries and artists by attracting people during peak shopping season. Our successful "Mistletoe Marketplace" is becoming a regional favorite during the holiday season.
Location & History: Conde Nast Traveler lists Beaufort as one of the most Beautiful Small Towns in America and said, "If you picture a perfect Southern town, it would probably look a lot like Beaufort, a South Carolina stunner complete with coastal views and 18th century mansions." Our campus is in the National Historic District, 2 blocks from the waterfront, near restaurants and shops. Founded in 1711, Beaufort is the 2nd oldest town in SC after Charleston.
